Yes, Please!Can I get a show of hands for all those out there who like FREE? Me too!<br />
<br />
I have discovered a great way to earn points to get Amazon or Paypal giftcards. By doing this, I have earned over $120. A little more than half of that I used around Christmas time for gifts. But I have used about $50 to buy books for my classroom from Amazon.<br />
<br />
I can hear you asking, what is this amazing thing you have discovered? What is the catch? Do I have to promise my firstborn in return? The answer is...surveys. You can earn cash in three simple steps. Click <a href="https://www.proopinion.com/general/recruitment/earn-cash?Referer=MDBmOd1xGjno2u04Rc3DbHJYcRtvMANC&cpid=9543&offer_id=2111&affiliate_id=2619&aff_sub=myDashboard&transaction_id=102f556e5ee5452dbbf3440977a2f0&params=#.VsN7ZM8TLiU.facebook">HERE</a> and sign up. Take surveys. Earn points that you can then exchange for Amazon or Paypal cards! <br />
<br />
I don't blame you for thinking, could this be as good as she is making it sound? I know that I did at first. Around Thanksgiving I was on Pinterest, hunting around for some easy ways to make a little extra money before Christmas. I came across a pin about taking surveys, and thought, why not? Once I earned my first 1000 points, I could exchange them for a gift card. This was the real test. Would I really get a code for an e-card, or did I just get scammed? To my astonishment, in my inbox, an e-mail with a redeeming code appeared. Again, I remember thinking, okay, but will it work when I go to <i>use</i> it. Um, yes. Yes it did!<br />
<br />
And that is how my classroom world has changed.<br />
<br />
I have a pretty large classroom library. My mom was a teacher and I "inherited" all of her goods when she retired. However, I was lacking in guided reading sets. Over the past month or so, I have gotten (FOR FREE) these books to add to my guided reading arsenal:<br />
<br />

<br />
So. What do you think? Are you going to give it a shot? <br />
<br />
Aside from Scholastic, does anyone have any other tips on how to get free or super cheap books? I'd love to hear your tricks!<br />

Happy Tuesday!<br />

I've been missing. For a long time. Almost <b><i>two</i></b> years. Where have I been?<br />
<br />
To begin, we put our house on the market almost three years ago. After about a year, we finally sold it! We then bought a 37 acre farm that was under foreclosure. It had been abandoned for several years. To put it simply, it was a MESS...which might just be the understatement of the century.<br />
<br />
Here are some before pictures that we took on the day that we closed. Outside:<br />

As you can see, there was just a little bit of wood paneling in the house. Just a bit.<br />
<br />
We closed in May. For the next THREE MONTHS, we lived in our camper as we gutted the house. I mean, we took it back to the studs. Thankfully, my husband is a contractor and we were able to do most of the work ourselves. When I say "we," of course I mean "he." <br />

<br />
Of course, we have SO much more to do. We keep telling ourselves that the farm was abandoned for years, so we won't be able to have it in pristine condition quickly. It is definitely a work in progress!<br />
<br />
Now you know where I have been for a huge part of the time when I was missing. I'll be back soon to add to the story!<br />
<br />
Happy Sunday!<br />

<br />
I was looking through my old blog posts for the first time in a few years, and couldn't believe all of the memories that I had forgotten. That walk down memory lane inspired me to begin my blogging journey again.<br />
<br />
I'm going to ease back in slowly, by sharing my February Currently.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ErzewWXl5RU/Vr97yrq3gfI/AAAAAAAABZo/v1AouMDHdQc/s1600/currently%2Bfeb.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ErzewWXl5RU/Vr97yrq3gfI/AAAAAAAABZo/v1AouMDHdQc/s400/currently%2Bfeb.png" width="312" /></a></div>
<br />
Stay tuned, because I will be back with a lot of updates from my almost two year hiatus: almost changed grades, moved classrooms, philosophy changes, guided math, guided reading, the list just goes on and on.<br />
<br />
Happy Saturday!<br />
<br />

<br />
To begin, I want to say a HUGE thank you to Mai Huynh, my first day of school blogger exchange friend! Look at the sweet goodies that she sent:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MSvEruSJA2s/UhKoFVG9brI/AAAAAAAABWo/Ottfg5KVaEo/s1600/DSC_0343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MSvEruSJA2s/UhKoFVG9brI/AAAAAAAABWo/Ottfg5KVaEo/s320/DSC_0343.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
I have already used one of the cards to write a note to my son's teacher thanking her for a great first day. I am using a new color pen each day. The colors make me so happy!<br />
<br />
Please head over to Mai's blog, <a href="http://diaryofagrumpyteacher.blogspot.com/">Diary of a Grumpy Teacher</a>. It is great!<br />
<br />
<br />
If you have read any of my posts from earlier this summer, you may know that I decided to change my color scheme. Here are some pictures showing the end results.<br />

Happy Monday!Mrs. Nunleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06913946045048488487noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889020061976379591.post-7456226470386826132013-07-23T13:48:00.000-04:002013-07-23T13:48:02.948-04:00The Great Crayon ProjectToday, I heard those two dreaded words come out of my seven-year-old's mouth: "I'm bored." <br />
<br />
AAUGH!!!!!!!!!<br />
<br />
Well, I just hopped over to my pinterest boards and found some things for us to do. We did a couple of experiments. The first one was the standard baking soda and vinegar. Both boys thought that was pretty neat.<br />
<br />
Next, we did an experiment using white vinegar and pennies. It's supposed to turn them green after a few hours/days. Here's a pic:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C7bAeiy4CA8/Ue68wYcJQnI/AAAAAAAABVk/dhxTfVBzDe4/s1600/DSC_0301.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C7bAeiy4CA8/Ue68wYcJQnI/AAAAAAAABVk/dhxTfVBzDe4/s320/DSC_0301.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Lastly we did what I am calling the Great Crayon Project.<br />
<br />
You start by getting crayons, you know the odds and end broken pieces that you have laying around. Peel the paper off each one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hToJ4G2CCHc/Ue69HBQ-poI/AAAAAAAABVs/pnKXFruzVqY/s1600/DSC_0302.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hToJ4G2CCHc/Ue69HBQ-poI/AAAAAAAABVs/pnKXFruzVqY/s320/DSC_0302.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next step: Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Cut a piece of cardboard to fit in the cookie sheet. Arrange the crayons on the cardboard.<br />
<br />
Here is Luke's:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-104P3C21pac/Ue69_oJLFCI/AAAAAAAABV4/fmhbobhflHs/s1600/DSC_0304.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-104P3C21pac/Ue69_oJLFCI/AAAAAAAABV4/fmhbobhflHs/s320/DSC_0304.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Here's mine:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRUmMQHCQAI/Ue6-DJLLXRI/AAAAAAAABWE/4t5J6vbNWHw/s1600/DSC_0303.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRUmMQHCQAI/Ue6-DJLLXRI/AAAAAAAABWE/4t5J6vbNWHw/s320/DSC_0303.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
After you have arranged the crayons, put the cookie sheets in the oven at 250 degrees for about ten minutes. When the time is up use a craft stick and swirl around the melted wax.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tvk-y6s1DYM/Ue6-IQ_JCtI/AAAAAAAABWM/-6b1kClKdYo/s1600/DSC_0305.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tvk-y6s1DYM/Ue6-IQ_JCtI/AAAAAAAABWM/-6b1kClKdYo/s320/DSC_0305.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The final product:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1qTQlpvdxII/Ue6-VGbNdgI/AAAAAAAABWc/c_p1wKkXfqE/s1600/DSC_0307.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1qTQlpvdxII/Ue6-VGbNdgI/AAAAAAAABWc/c_p1wKkXfqE/s320/DSC_0307.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Luke's Crayon Creation</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Im87280Rfcs/Ue6-NRukA3I/AAAAAAAABWU/5fNLIV4BXKI/s1600/DSC_0306.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Im87280Rfcs/Ue6-NRukA3I/AAAAAAAABWU/5fNLIV4BXKI/s320/DSC_0306.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Crayon Creation</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Once the wax has cooled, I am going to cut away the excess cardboard so our art can be displayed.<br />
<br />
What are some fun projects that you have created this summer?<br />
<br />
Happy Tuesday!<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jF-pXjtfbNg/Ue2XFGOEeVI/AAAAAAAABVE/MYST1iGMI1w/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jF-pXjtfbNg/Ue2XFGOEeVI/AAAAAAAABVE/MYST1iGMI1w/s1600/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
They worked okay, but they really weren't that sturdy.<br /><br />
<br />
So, last year, I ordered these to use as my book boxes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CEiuwmzcb2Q/Ue2PjBHVLxI/AAAAAAAABUE/-SHnRZa_BlQ/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CEiuwmzcb2Q/Ue2PjBHVLxI/AAAAAAAABUE/-SHnRZa_BlQ/s1600/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
I bought them from Classroom Direct. I really liked them and <i>thought</i> that they would be durable. Little did I know that I would have a class that was quite rough on our supplies. Let's just say I had several students who did not realize their own strength.<br />
<br />
I knew that I was going to have to do something different this year. Earlier this summer, I saw this from Really Good Stuff:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L2hqJydpt3Q/Ue2QwmYke8I/AAAAAAAABUc/HBZB3opC788/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-L2hqJydpt3Q/Ue2QwmYke8I/AAAAAAAABUc/HBZB3opC788/s1600/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
I was/am in LOVE. It is $169 and it's not just the frame....the plastic bins come with it! With their EZ pay option, I could convince myself that I wasn't spending as much money (stupid, I know).<br />
<br />
After being back ordered for little over a month, it FINALLY arrived. It took me less than a half an hour to put it together!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FcvQot8z6Us/Ue2UJHiReMI/AAAAAAAABUs/P4K1peeZA0Q/s1600/DSC_0298.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FcvQot8z6Us/Ue2UJHiReMI/AAAAAAAABUs/P4K1peeZA0Q/s320/DSC_0298.JPG" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
It also came with labels and plastic covers:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FJkSIr-XEP4/Ue2Uaq134LI/AAAAAAAABU0/GUxFctSR_yk/s1600/DSC_0299.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FJkSIr-XEP4/Ue2Uaq134LI/AAAAAAAABU0/GUxFctSR_yk/s320/DSC_0299.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The boxes come in a variety of color choices. Click <a href="http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/really-good-student-bins-organizing-rack-with-bins/p/161266/">HERE</a> if you would like to go to check it out for yourself!<br />

This week, Ashley is having her Ten Pin Linky with a writing theme.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DNFz-1KoTwE/UeqKN4x8y8I/AAAAAAAABSA/nnjAp4pMoqo/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DNFz-1KoTwE/UeqKN4x8y8I/AAAAAAAABSA/nnjAp4pMoqo/s320/a1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
In no particular order....<br />
<br />
1. I am in LOVE with this writing station. In fact, I have already created my own version using my colors for this year.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X22hosewR6Y/UeqK70qXeEI/AAAAAAAABSM/K0TWNwY5wK8/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X22hosewR6Y/UeqK70qXeEI/AAAAAAAABSM/K0TWNwY5wK8/s320/a1.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/113984399396097313755/ClassroomWalls0809#5272392234655320418">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2. I really like the idea of students rating their own writing. This is a great, kid-friendly rubric for them to begin to see what good writing should look like.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_NAfwlIJrC4/UeqLjmJmK6I/AAAAAAAABSY/RAChWR3HpqA/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_NAfwlIJrC4/UeqLjmJmK6I/AAAAAAAABSY/RAChWR3HpqA/s320/a1.jpg" width="114" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://firstgradelyonsden.blogspot.com/2011/09/look-into-writers-workshop.html">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
3. The idea of using props as hooks is really helpful. Here is one for sifting through ideas.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XDfoC-oXsI4/UeqMIgHDIQI/AAAAAAAABSg/fbcWF-TIffg/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XDfoC-oXsI4/UeqMIgHDIQI/AAAAAAAABSg/fbcWF-TIffg/s1600/a1.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tunstalltimes.blogspot.com/2012/07/motivating-students-with-props-from.html?showComment=1341149688245#c8099035220933538606">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
4. Another prop for remembering to use great handwriting. I actually had a silver platter last year...I got it for about 3.00 at Olde Time Pottery.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MF2G1L0kWbg/UeqNGCK2VdI/AAAAAAAABSw/6TGQfHreVdY/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MF2G1L0kWbg/UeqNGCK2VdI/AAAAAAAABSw/6TGQfHreVdY/s320/a1.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://tunstalltimes.blogspot.com/2012/07/motivating-students-with-props-from.html?showComment=1341149688245#c8099035220933538606">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
5. The last prop is another that I have used and blogged about. It is relating writing and building a house. You have to have a plan.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t7xPT5Pob0c/UeqRQq0E6pI/AAAAAAAABTA/ycR4QAk_g5U/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t7xPT5Pob0c/UeqRQq0E6pI/AAAAAAAABTA/ycR4QAk_g5U/s1600/a1.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://firstgrademagic.blogspot.com/2012/08/writing-youve-gotta-have-plan.html">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
6. So many times when firsties are beginning to learn how to write, everything is connected by the dreaded "and." This pin should help that...problem.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3y1znEK7sQ4/UeqR0JL7DaI/AAAAAAAABTI/rI2OmJCcWLw/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3y1znEK7sQ4/UeqR0JL7DaI/AAAAAAAABTI/rI2OmJCcWLw/s1600/a1.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://polkadotfirsties.blogspot.com/2013/07/ten-pin-linky-writing.html">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
7. The next few pins are to make writing more fun. Something to make it seem different then just using pencil and paper.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tp3Utsv8pfE/UeqSzT3SDVI/AAAAAAAABTY/Xn-SsxFYoH4/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tp3Utsv8pfE/UeqSzT3SDVI/AAAAAAAABTY/Xn-SsxFYoH4/s320/a1.jpg" width="213" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://justreed-ashley.blogspot.com/">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
8.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-02WdDzI_kSk/UeqTOlh0mFI/AAAAAAAABTg/CmgymmlrRp4/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-02WdDzI_kSk/UeqTOlh0mFI/AAAAAAAABTg/CmgymmlrRp4/s1600/a1.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.luckytobeinfirst.com/2013/07/10-pin-linky-writing.html">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
9. Even in first grade, we can start teaching about using words other than he said, she said, I said...you get the picture.<br />

This one was for Ag in the Classroom (AITC). I think I have posted about this before, but yesterday's workshop was fantastic. <br />
<br />
A little background: AITC is a nonprofit organization that gives teachers resources to incorporate science across the curriculum. The workshops are fun, informative, have a make-and-take section, and always end with getting a bag of goodies!<br />
<br />
This year, AITC's theme is Jump Start Your School Garden. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pueowUcr1AI/UeaVo1Ul8lI/AAAAAAAABPw/m1Ex1HdZtB8/s1600/DSC_0282.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pueowUcr1AI/UeaVo1Ul8lI/AAAAAAAABPw/m1Ex1HdZtB8/s1600/DSC_0282.JPG" height="214" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The booklet we got was full of fantastic ideas. Some of my favorites are:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rSA0GFkRMLg/UeaVz2aNMmI/AAAAAAAABP4/h5HuU67VwlI/s1600/DSC_0283.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rSA0GFkRMLg/UeaVz2aNMmI/AAAAAAAABP4/h5HuU67VwlI/s1600/DSC_0283.JPG" height="214" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Butterfly Life Cycle</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3L5Yy0mQSiA/UeaV9bMeIBI/AAAAAAAABQA/JpnBqAxCr5M/s1600/DSC_0284.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3L5Yy0mQSiA/UeaV9bMeIBI/AAAAAAAABQA/JpnBqAxCr5M/s1600/DSC_0284.JPG" height="214" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pizza Garden Fractions</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
During the make-it-take-it portion of the day, I made two crafts.<br />
<br />The first one was a plant parts flip book. Please excuse my terrible artistic skills!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IEoLLONzjVE/UeaWcC-jDkI/AAAAAAAABQI/Mx7n_7RCtA8/s1600/DSC_0285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IEoLLONzjVE/UeaWcC-jDkI/AAAAAAAABQI/Mx7n_7RCtA8/s1600/DSC_0285.JPG" height="214" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V1g3sZ5X2fw/UeaWiVxI8rI/AAAAAAAABQQ/xjpDloDjSAo/s1600/DSC_0287.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V1g3sZ5X2fw/UeaWiVxI8rI/AAAAAAAABQQ/xjpDloDjSAo/s1600/DSC_0287.JPG" height="214" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The second craft, and I'm using the term loosely simply because it is WAY more than just a craft, is a math flower. It is actually for upper grades because it shows prime and composite numbers. However, I turned it into a way for my firsties to think about all the ways to add to a number. Here is my example, excuse my lopsided flower:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JVl0kAQb7hQ/UeaXQ_EHmQI/AAAAAAAABQc/rarR_l8mCTs/s1600/DSC_0288.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JVl0kAQb7hQ/UeaXQ_EHmQI/AAAAAAAABQc/rarR_l8mCTs/s1600/DSC_0288.JPG" height="320" width="214" /></a></div>
<br />
Every teacher in the workshop was also given a bag of FREE resources:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Are you interested? AITC has a website with TONS of free resources for teachers. There are so many lesson plans aligned with the S.O.L.s. Yes, this is a Virginia organization, however, our standards are pretty much in line with Common Core.<br />

Happy Wednesday!Mrs. Nunleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06913946045048488487noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889020061976379591.post-72958274879976627912013-07-15T18:19:00.000-04:002013-07-15T18:19:31.649-04:00Foul Ball...and Other StuffHello everyone! I know that it has been awhile since I last posted, but my family and I were on a camping trip. One of the things that we did was go to a minor league baseball game. It was one of the highlights of the trip. We had great seats behind home plate, but then the sun moved and it got HOT! So we moved to some bleacher seats right behind the visiting team's relief pitchers. <br />
<br />
It was Dog Day at the game, and everything was quite casual. My youngest was climbing up and down the steps and on one of is trips, he noticed the players. There is not a shy bone in that child's body, so he started talking to the players. You can imagine my husband and my surprise when one of the guys rolled him a baseball!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jW8vF6aWHYI/UeRxJPx1tQI/AAAAAAAABOc/mUSZwK9lIVE/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jW8vF6aWHYI/UeRxJPx1tQI/AAAAAAAABOc/mUSZwK9lIVE/s1600/a1.jpg" height="320" width="234" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
My oldest was happy for his brother, but jealous too. My husband told him we would try to catch a foul ball. No other balls came our way, and Luke was pretty sad. As we were leaving, I heard this rolling sound and the man walking in front of us turned around and asked if either of the boys wanted the foul ball that just rolled in front of him! We thanked him profusely and both boys have a new treasure!!<br />
<br />
Today, the real world smacked me because I had a professional development conference. The presenter was Shannon Samulski from Michigan. She has developed what she calls Intervention Kits for math, reading, and writing. <br />
<br />
There were several points that she made that really resonated with me. The first was reaching the child's instructional match. She had us read a passage with many made up words so we could see how struggling students feel when being asked to read something on their frustration level. She said that we spend way more time then we think teaching above their instructional level. <br />
<br />
A second tip that she talked about was the necessity of repetition. A child with an IQ of 120 needs to practice 25 times. IQ of 100, 35 times. An IQ of 80? 55 times! We talked a lot about how with pacing guides, and mandated curriculum, it is really difficult to get enough repetitions for our struggling students. She gave us a LOT to think about.<br />
<br />
If you would like to check out her ideas, this is her website:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">http://www.strategicinterventionsolutions.org/</td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"> </td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"> </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
She also has a blog:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hsb_o2eq2kM/UeR0xGd1UcI/AAAAAAAABO0/Ofm9mcG0--E/s1600/a1.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hsb_o2eq2kM/UeR0xGd1UcI/AAAAAAAABO0/Ofm9mcG0--E/s1600/a1.bmp" height="86" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">http://interventionsonthego.blogspot.com/</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
She offers freebies on both!!<br />
<br />
I have a couple of questions for you:<br />
<br />
1. Have you ever heard Shannon's presentations?<br />
2. Have you worked in a school where she has coached the teachers?<br />
3. Have you used her intervention kits?<br />
<br />

We watched some fireworks. However it was a toss-up as to who disliked them more: Parker, our youngest, or the dog! Let me tell you...it's hard to have a four year old AND a black lab trying to get on your lap!!<br />
<br />
On to the post. Along with a regular word wall, I use mini word posters in my writing station that are themed by month. I have created one for Back to School.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-To-School-Word-Wall-752068"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7m3lLA-veJ0/Udi4LQecgEI/AAAAAAAABOA/Lu4jguUkGv0/s320/a+back+to+school+word+wall.bmp" width="246" /></a></div>
<br />
The first three people to comment will receive this word wall for......FREE! Make sure that you leave me your e-mail in your comment! If anyone else is interested, click the picture and it will take you to my TPT store.<br />

I have a friend that I teach with whose husband was diagnosed with Leukemia in January. He has a rare genetic issue that will never allow him to be in remission. He is scheduled for a bone marrow transplant toward the end of January.<br />
<br />
Over the weekend, he developed a fever (his last round of chemo was a week or so ago, so he has no immune system to speak of right now). Along with the fever, he developed pneumonia and has some sort of staph infection. Thankfully, they sent him to Wake Forest, which is where he receives all of his chemo treatments.<br />
<br />
Last night, however, his heart rate soared to over 200bpm and then his blood pressure bottomed out. They rushed him to ICU and with medication have gotten his heart rate down and his blood pressure up. <br />
<br />
I absolutely believe in the power of prayer. Please keep this family in your prayers. Their daughter, an upcoming seventh grader, is understandably having a lot of trouble processing and accepting what is happening to her Daddy. <br />
<br />
Thank you so much, my bloggy friends.<br />

One thing that I had to tweak was my word wall. The only space that I have available near my writing work station is a long, narrow piece of wall. So, I created a word wall to fit is that area. The word wall uses yellow consonant headers and blue vowel headers. The actual words are Dolch: preprimer, primer, first grade and second grade. Right now, it is a <u style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">flash freebie</u>!! <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Word-Wall-751147">CLICK HERE</a> to go download a free copy!<div>

Happy Monday!</div>

P.S. If you like the idea of the word wall, but would like a different color scheme, let me know - I might be able to have the color combos you would like!</div>

Last week I pinned so many that I thought my board was going to explode! <br />
<br />
The theme for this week is math!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_dzzJunIyUM/UdCvYfZ1aGI/AAAAAAAABKk/-Mt3DjQZMJ4/s320/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_dzzJunIyUM/UdCvYfZ1aGI/AAAAAAAABKk/-Mt3DjQZMJ4/s320/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I love to use picture books to introduce math concepts. The first one that I would like to share is <u>Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday</u>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A9TKoWvJO2I/UdCwFG77G9I/AAAAAAAABKs/nhBSD3Y4Ku4/s160/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A9TKoWvJO2I/UdCwFG77G9I/AAAAAAAABKs/nhBSD3Y4Ku4/s160/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
I really love this book. Alexander's grandmother gives him some money. He spends some, loses some, and my students really get into it. I always start with the amount of money he gets and then subtract what he spends. I hear lots of "uh-oh"s and "I bet he won't have any left!" A lot of times they will say that Alexander is wasting his money.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
When we adopted our new math series (EnVision), we also received several math books written by Stuart J. Murphy. Here are some of my faves:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ecmTqhnc4t4/UdC2UzeduoI/AAAAAAAABK8/ae1cc9MZooQ/s160/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ecmTqhnc4t4/UdC2UzeduoI/AAAAAAAABK8/ae1cc9MZooQ/s160/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KNqBsx9mQ94/UdC2eLMbuTI/AAAAAAAABLE/-z9Fux_HuA4/s160/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KNqBsx9mQ94/UdC2eLMbuTI/AAAAAAAABLE/-z9Fux_HuA4/s160/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DdgCqBgQYws/UdC2muzBtUI/AAAAAAAABLM/oVNB9EBnyVg/s160/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DdgCqBgQYws/UdC2muzBtUI/AAAAAAAABLM/oVNB9EBnyVg/s160/a1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Head on over and link up! I can't wait to get some new math titles!<br />
<br />
Happy Sunday!<br />
Mrs. Nunleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06913946045048488487noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889020061976379591.post-14956932094835807272013-06-29T20:41:00.001-04:002013-06-29T20:41:08.119-04:00Thank You KaSandra!!I mentioned in my post yesterday that KaSandra from <a href="http://www.memoriesmadeinfirst.blogspot.com/">Memories Made in First</a> shared with me that I could find cheap kids' Adirondack chairs from Walmart. I bought them earlier in the week. Here they are:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CFgkSqc-8aA/Uc9825tTtOI/AAAAAAAABKE/tJOM50k1qYU/s1600/DSC_0279.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CFgkSqc-8aA/Uc9825tTtOI/AAAAAAAABKE/tJOM50k1qYU/s1600/DSC_0279.JPG" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Here they are again with a couple of models.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0TlBIl6fzMM/Uc99BmOT2BI/AAAAAAAABKM/bAxYiplo_YU/s1600/DSC_0277.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0TlBIl6fzMM/Uc99BmOT2BI/AAAAAAAABKM/bAxYiplo_YU/s1600/DSC_0277.JPG" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
Aren't they cute? Parker is my youngest and Luke will be a second grader!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I started spray painting and of course, I RAN OUT OF PAINT! But I was able to finish one and it turned out pretty well. I think they will be the perfect addition to my classroom library.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r1p6lmFyu0I/Uc99gRluyEI/AAAAAAAABKU/HLj3JSLvCVY/s1600/DSC_0280.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r1p6lmFyu0I/Uc99gRluyEI/AAAAAAAABKU/HLj3JSLvCVY/s1600/DSC_0280.JPG" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Happy Saturday!<br />
Mrs. Nunleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06913946045048488487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889020061976379591.post-65562668874963321692013-06-28T21:44:00.000-04:002013-06-28T22:25:18.016-04:00New Look!!WooHoo!!<br />
<br />
I finally, <i>finally, <u><b>finally</b></u></i> figured out how to pretty up this little blog! I know, I know. I'm slow. What can I say? It looks a tad more pulled together, don't you think?<br />
<br />
I have also created a facebook page. Click <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FirstGradeMagic">here</a> and you can come on over and show me some FB love!<br />
<br />
I want to say thank you to KaSandra, over at <a href="http://www.memoriesmadeinfirst.blogspot.com/">Memories Made in First</a>. She told me that Walmart has cute kids Adirondack chairs that are cheap. While I was on my shopping adventure with my boys on Tuesday, I picked up two...for $3.75 each!! The ones that I had seen at a local grocery store were ten dollars apiece!<br />
<br />
I went back to Walmart today and bought some spray paint (yellow)...hopefully the weather tomorrow will cooperate and I can show you how they look.<br />
<br />
What type of seating do you use in your classroom library?<br />
<br />
Happy, Happy Friday!Mrs. Nunleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06913946045048488487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889020061976379591.post-3329497761009557712013-06-26T08:17:00.000-04:002013-06-26T08:17:31.451-04:00Ten Pin Linky Party: Math StyleI can't tell you how many ideas that I have gotten as a result of Ashley's Ten Pin Linky Parties. This week, it's all about math!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WWUN9u6S6kM/UcrUCUCI-aI/AAAAAAAABGA/0CmMzt1ZoYQ/s1600/a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WWUN9u6S6kM/UcrUCUCI-aI/AAAAAAAABGA/0CmMzt1ZoYQ/s320/a1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
1. I LOVE this anchor chart that can be used during our money unit:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vnwoTUVUXpI/TpjXIp5VJkI/AAAAAAAABEo/VFPpPdVFapo/s1600/IMG_1371.jpg"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t49ubFHW7eA/UcrUvBF_kDI/AAAAAAAABGI/bg0cPdqnnZ0/s320/aa1.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
2. This anchor chart is fabulous for 3D shapes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://meetmissparker.blogspot.com/2013/03/spring-sale-common-core-math-3d-shapes.html"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fmj3GufTHWE/UcrVn8cWL8I/AAAAAAAABGY/uALyL5vPdG4/s1600/a1aa.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
3. My next math pin goes along with <a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/2011/07/math-calendar-companion-edited-k.html">Cara Carroll's Calendar Companion</a>. I made one last summer and used it this past year. I love, love, love it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://theinspiredapple.blogspot.jp/2011/09/math-in-focus-activities-for-first.html"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HFBRNjaqcxc/UcrWJEMAgBI/AAAAAAAABGo/Hj9AFUf4-98/s320/a1aa.jpg" width="232" /></a></div>
<br />
4. The following anchor chart is a great poem for teaching subtraction with regrouping.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com/2011/07/math-calendar-companion-edited-k.html"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GpbzavGAaTA/UcrXI9-j2NI/AAAAAAAABG4/-khqVIV815g/s320/a1aa.jpg" width="245" /></a></div>
<br />
5. and 6. The next two pins are for fractions.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_3kfGAbQvjM/T5CSGp3axMI/AAAAAAAADxE/uAhk6Ig6cKo/s1600/074.JPG"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rZZM5coYauM/UcrXoM04cGI/AAAAAAAABHA/dE6jV78VWeA/s320/a1aa.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MyxZ0pbdc-Y/T5CSJ37pWKI/AAAAAAAADxM/e7n0CdtPHkk/s1600/076.JPG"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6IaGPzqUCFw/UcrX3rxDIVI/AAAAAAAABHI/OyoayZX6OYg/s320/a1aa.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
7. This pin shows an easy way to do daily graphing. I like how it doesn't take up too much space.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MyxZ0pbdc-Y/T5CSJ37pWKI/AAAAAAAADxM/e7n0CdtPHkk/s1600/076.JPG"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ge1UH5GgGtU/UcrYYb7EnmI/AAAAAAAABHQ/kJcBk0K_f3M/s320/a1aa.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
8. I love using literature to introduce math concepts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lTY4i0xMpnU/UcrZUZBvkVI/AAAAAAAABHg/2muLHg5dWyk/s1600/a1aa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lTY4i0xMpnU/UcrZUZBvkVI/AAAAAAAABHg/2muLHg5dWyk/s320/a1aa.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
9. This past year, while working on things like one more, one less, ten more, ten less, I had several little friends that really struggled with that concept. This would be a perfect tool to help those kiddos understand:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yI7ALVyLVBs/UcraOQJ0bNI/AAAAAAAABHw/bxuRxJtjBNw/s1600/a1aa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yI7ALVyLVBs/UcraOQJ0bNI/AAAAAAAABHw/bxuRxJtjBNw/s1600/a1aa.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
10. I saved the last pin for the one that I am most excited about this summer. I'm sure that a lot of you have seen <a href="http://tunstalltimes.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-teachers-math-resource.html">Reagan Tunstall's A Teacher's Math Resources</a>. The first one is free on TPT! I love how she has organized the essential questions and big ideas to be in sequential order and uses spiraling review. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

I know, I know. It's Tuesday. But, today is payday. Enough said.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kt9L_SHx5zg/Ucn9r6RcAiI/AAAAAAAABFw/EsI_uaRoc9Q/s1600/a1a1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kt9L_SHx5zg/Ucn9r6RcAiI/AAAAAAAABFw/EsI_uaRoc9Q/s1600/a1a1.png" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I posted a few days ago about wanting to use a color theme of gray, yellow, white and black. With those colors in mind, I loaded up my boys and we went to Target. And Walmart. I think it is official that I'm crazy. This shopping trip proves it!<br />
<br />
I've seen on pinterest lots of wreaths using fabric rosettes. I decided that I was going to try to create one. I should probably stop here and share that both my mom and sister are FANTASTIC artists. My sister was actually a studio art <i>major</i> in college. I did not get any of the creativity/artistic genes that they have. I can't even draw a straight line with a ruler. But I decided to try anyway.<br />
<br />
Here is the result. I was pleasantly surprised!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GZOiitBL8I4/Ucn8meWBuxI/AAAAAAAABFY/sAszIve9ZVE/s1600/DSC_0268.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GZOiitBL8I4/Ucn8meWBuxI/AAAAAAAABFY/sAszIve9ZVE/s320/DSC_0268.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Here are a couple of close-ups:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-95Pj_1r3JEc/Ucn8zcPheVI/AAAAAAAABFg/yV8cbiovLs0/s1600/DSC_0269.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-95Pj_1r3JEc/Ucn8zcPheVI/AAAAAAAABFg/yV8cbiovLs0/s320/DSC_0269.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Im3WEklG1eM/Ucn87kdXu3I/AAAAAAAABFo/hL2ixFIUwvE/s1600/DSC_0270.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Im3WEklG1eM/Ucn87kdXu3I/AAAAAAAABFo/hL2ixFIUwvE/s320/DSC_0270.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm going to be hanging the wreath on my classroom door. <br />
<br />
Happy Tuesday!<br />

It is for picture books and each week will have a different theme. Since I can't resist a good linky party, I am going to jump right in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YF79Q5TBwq4/UcY74jJkw4I/AAAAAAAABFI/_t8E2bFW2iY/s1600/a1a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YF79Q5TBwq4/UcY74jJkw4I/AAAAAAAABFI/_t8E2bFW2iY/s1600/a1a.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
There are several "go to" books that I use during the first few days of school. Up first, <u>First Day Jitters</u>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nYyGrWFWI7I/UcY7ASLuJEI/AAAAAAAABEw/SwalA2lck0Y/s1600/a1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nYyGrWFWI7I/UcY7ASLuJEI/AAAAAAAABEw/SwalA2lck0Y/s1600/a1.jpeg" /></a></div>
I love this story because the students <i>think</i> the story is about a kid, but they see at the end it is really about the teacher!<br />
<br />
Another book that I LOVE reading during the first few days of school is <u>Chrysanthemum</u>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nWEuFeXv1CA/UcY7iPsaPCI/AAAAAAAABE4/0A6yXWDPegY/s1600/a1a.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nWEuFeXv1CA/UcY7iPsaPCI/AAAAAAAABE4/0A6yXWDPegY/s1600/a1a.jpeg" /></a></div>
It does such a nice job of teaching kindness and acceptance.<br />
<br />

<br />Mrs. Nunleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06913946045048488487noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889020061976379591.post-38700744808665492492013-06-21T11:46:00.001-04:002013-06-21T11:46:46.674-04:00Possible New Theme...Hip or Hideous?Okay. I think that we all know that I love owls, but my classroom is not covered in owl....stuff. I have touches here and there. I'm thinking about keeping my subtle owl hints, but using a new color theme.<br />
<br />
I ordered some fabric from Hobby Lobby for "my" bulletin board. You know, where I keep myself organized. It came today, and I am THRILLED to pieces with it. It is a gray and white chevron:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hgDWE688FS0/UcRxiqDpaeI/AAAAAAAABEQ/GRtJsyJqRto/s1600/DSC_0267.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hgDWE688FS0/UcRxiqDpaeI/AAAAAAAABEQ/GRtJsyJqRto/s320/DSC_0267.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I would like to use main colors of gray, white, yellow, and black. I was thinking about having the other bulletin board backgrounds in the room be yellow and black. How does this look? Not the lemon, of course, but that color saturation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zzt29MDLhm8/UcRx10AUc9I/AAAAAAAABEY/GbiOY8N1yl4/s1600/DSC_0265.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zzt29MDLhm8/UcRx10AUc9I/AAAAAAAABEY/GbiOY8N1yl4/s320/DSC_0265.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now is where it could easily go to tacky town. What would it look like to use main colors of gray, white, black, and yellow? With hints of blue and green? Here is my thinking. Black, gray, and white are neutrals that go with anything (Thanks Stacy and Clinton!). Blue and yellow make green, so they kinda go together? Maybe? Sorta?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VKEoEyzDrcQ/UcRyS9xdCNI/AAAAAAAABEg/jnnk55xdCy0/s1600/DSC_0266.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VKEoEyzDrcQ/UcRyS9xdCNI/AAAAAAAABEg/jnnk55xdCy0/s320/DSC_0266.JPG" width="214" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The blue and green would come in as accents with library baskets, book boxes, maybe a couple of tissue paper pom-poms. Oh, and the carpet is blue, so there's not much I can do about that!<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm going for a soothing cohesive classroom. Would this color train take me to an ahhhhh like room, or an overstimulated, tacky, AAUGH room?<br />
<br />
Help me, my stylish bloggy friends!<br />
<br />Mrs. Nunleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06913946045048488487noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8889020061976379591.post-31252933846014799632013-06-19T10:14:00.000-04:002013-06-19T14:00:25.099-04:00Ten Pin Linky Week 2<br />It's time for the second installment of <a href="http://www.justreed-ashley.blogspot.com/2013/06/ten-pin-linky-week-two-classroom.html">Ashley's</a> Ten Pin Linky Parties! I was soooo inspired by all the great ideas last week, and I can't wait to see what interesting tidbits will appear!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.justreed-ashley.blogspot.com/2013/06/ten-pin-linky-week-two-classroom.html"><img border="0" height="246" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mFT00pkcMyw/UcGxPEmGdII/AAAAAAAABB8/zAZBDHiA19c/s320/Ten+Pin2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
1. I loved this idea and actually used it toward the end of the school year. Groups earned points for good behavior. Each member of the winning group picked a ping pong ball. I had a pocket chart with corresponding numbers and prizes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://entirelyelementary.blogspot.com/2012/07/ping-pong-prizes-summer-project-3.html"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pc7TRrKgVY0/UcGx7WmojFI/AAAAAAAABCE/PMgq-GVAjbQ/s320/a1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
2. I know I posted about this pin last week, but I REALLY like it! Each time the class is doing a nice job, or receives a compliment from another teacher or adult, they get a warm fuzzy added to the jar. Once the jar is filled, the class gets to vote on a prize. My son's first grade teacher (who was FANTASTIC!!) used a similar method last year. Luke LOVED it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-76NXWuo_AAo/UcGzQsUcpVI/AAAAAAAABCU/NuEFT_UABkA/s1600/a2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-76NXWuo_AAo/UcGzQsUcpVI/AAAAAAAABCU/NuEFT_UABkA/s320/a2.jpg" width="233" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
3. One thing that drives me crazy to the point of pulling out my hair is the dreaded.....pencil! I discovered The Wise Owl's Winning the Pencil War and am AMAZED at how BRILLIANT an idea this is! It is a freebie on TPT.....run and look at it! Go! You won't be disappointed!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://wiseowlteacher.blogspot.jp/2012/09/catching-up-and-great-pencil-war.html"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4I1Uzv9El6s/UcG0cCeetPI/AAAAAAAABCg/YS9nheq6ZOo/s320/a3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
4. You know how it is when you are in the middle of a project, and you hear, "My glue is dried up!" or "I can't find my scissors!" or "I need a pencil!"? That's where the borrow bucket comes in! This teacher has a caddy with extra supplies, all marked with a special kind of tape so everyone know that it <u><i><b>belongs</b></i></u> to the borrow bucket. Genius!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://whattheteacherwants.blogspot.jp/2013/06/borrow-bucket.html"><img border="0" height="238" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V5xKwNxOBAs/UcG1SBlFNZI/AAAAAAAABCo/etLIlAWI_As/s320/a4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
5. Again, I know that I had this in my Linky Party Post last week, but it's such a great idea that I had to share again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mrsterhune.blogspot.com/search?q=small+groups#uds-search-results"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z13etPBL8dU/UcG1uRjuYVI/AAAAAAAABC0/mwznlq0AM6o/s320/a5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
6. The next management pin deals with new students coming in the middle of the year. It is a frazzling moment anyway, so it would be so nice to be able to just pull out a bag of everything that my new friend will need.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://twothingsincommon.blogspot.com/2011/01/teacher-tips-on-snow-day.html"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5EPcV9_zWmc/UcG2p4erSeI/AAAAAAAABDA/XNc82U20dUw/s320/a6.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
7. Another thing that drives me crazy almost as much as pencils is editing student writing. I ran across this the other day and thought, how smart!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://theteachertalk22.blogspot.com/2013/06/ten-pin-linky.html"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dEu8XbgAk3Y/UcG3pxLNyOI/AAAAAAAABDQ/BSmdn8COzlY/s320/a7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
8. Part of my morning routine is AR (Accelerated Reader). I love the idea of putting more responsibility on the students. I usually check their O.W.L. books and see who is ready for a test. This way, the students sign themselves up for a test. When they are finished, they remove their number and the next child goes to take the test.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thefirstgradejungle.blogspot.jp/2011/12/accelerated-reader-and-read-to-self-are.html?m=1"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nkgLmZCo5Zc/UcG4fTz8c5I/AAAAAAAABDc/T9VGAuoJ1w4/s1600/a8.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
9. Our school focuses on word count with AR. The goal is to have each child reach at least 10,000 words by the end of the year. I love this idea for when they reach their 10,000 goal!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=461803713873745&set=a.201006523286800.69576.178027632251356"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MvYTsDCaSUQ/UcG5V1in1RI/AAAAAAAABDo/Kh0_THHT-UA/s320/a9.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
10. My final pin is a book about blurting out in class. That was a real problem for my classroom last year. I plan on getting this book and reading it periodically through the year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://spendadayinsecondgrade.blogspot.com/2012/09/blurt-chart-freebie.html"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FkCMG_2sfZA/UcG8POvydXI/AAAAAAAABD4/aHh0d0KruxI/s1600/a10.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I'm excited to see what pins you want to share. Go link up!<br />
<br />

How did I get ideas in the dark ages before Pinterest? For all you other Pinterest lovers out there, <a href="http://justreed-ashley.blogspot.com/2013/06/ten-pin-linky-party-your-favorite.html">Just Reed's Ashley</a> is having a super fun linky party:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AmxvBSlEbHM/UbsLgn24IhI/AAAAAAAAA_s/WM0JphRon8Y/s1600/Ten+Pin.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AmxvBSlEbHM/UbsLgn24IhI/AAAAAAAAA_s/WM0JphRon8Y/s320/Ten+Pin.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
1. I have just recently discovered her, but I love EVERYTHING about Mrs. Terhune's classroom! She is SO organized.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/165366617540300660/"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QkNXxb6H-HU/UbsMHQw33vI/AAAAAAAAA_0/_IfkPrZX3m8/s320/a1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
2. How amazing is this classroom library?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/165366617538045957/"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--sThK7acd08/UbsNRn2H0UI/AAAAAAAABAE/ZKnIJ7zaFdg/s1600/a2.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
3. I love this classroom writing station. It is so organized and visually appealing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/165366617538139578/"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZDF-lzKcSO4/UbsR6VHMyGI/AAAAAAAABAU/hVSVlEgZchw/s320/a3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
4. I REALLY want a tree in my classroom library area!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/165366617540236683/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lQGwxdXcJkk/UbsS4N5tN_I/AAAAAAAABAg/EXc0wd9HaYY/s1600/a4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
5. I so loved how Mrs. Terhune has her whole group area set up, that I just bought a music stand on ebay yesterday. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/165366617540306203/"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g1Bjjyat4fg/UbsX8bOwNOI/AAAAAAAABAw/2nqpMpNeSwc/s320/a5.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
6. It seems like my kiddos never have the right color crayon and we find them on the floor. I think that this will help that problem:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/165366617540306204/"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rzIxQAI1R8g/UbsYfoYnVoI/AAAAAAAABA4/txi4_x5-odM/s320/a6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/165366617540306206/"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-32wY7vVbyWg/UbsYvQ5eooI/AAAAAAAABBA/QON6RELVYpk/s320/a6a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

7. I am in love with these Adirondack chairs! I've been on the look out for some cheap, plastic, kid-sized ones, so if you know of a good spot to find them, let me know!<br />

One thing I want to do a better job of is having the students take pride and ownership in our classroom. Last year, I made an owl themed classroom job board that incorporated a tree and owls. Well, I want to use a tree and owls for something different (more about that later) so, I started to think this morning what could I do instead?<br />
<br />
I headed off to <a href="http://www.printcandee.com/">Print Candee</a> and found some really cute owl paper. I then got to work on creating a classroom job management system that has a <i>subtle</i> owl theme.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nk7Ep1KcPDU/UbdqAk9eWMI/AAAAAAAAA_I/l8PzZokk0uE/s1600/classroom+jobs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nk7Ep1KcPDU/UbdqAk9eWMI/AAAAAAAAA_I/l8PzZokk0uE/s1600/classroom+jobs.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nk7Ep1KcPDU/UbdqAk9eWMI/AAAAAAAAA_E/HSU5HOTRSh8/s1600/classroom+jobs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
After reading and researching about managing classrooms, I made just about every job that you can think of, and even included blank job charts:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wj6Sf7NUArw/UbduMDphDQI/AAAAAAAAA_c/z0GzSkQO7jY/s1600/job+chart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wj6Sf7NUArw/UbduMDphDQI/AAAAAAAAA_c/z0GzSkQO7jY/s1600/job+chart.jpg" /></a></div>
Jobs included are: paper monitor, glue monitor, scissor monitor, pencil monitor, door holder, line leader, office monitor, nurse monitor, classroom library monitor, light monitor, stations monitors, and floor monitors.<br />
<br />
There are 31 student name cards to use on the job cards. I plan on laminating everything and then using Velcro to attach the student name cards to the job cards.<br />
